The Connection Between Retiring Early and Living Longer

The Internal Pelvic Floor Dysfunction Course is a continuation of the External Pelvic Floor Dysfunction Course taught the day before. During the Internal Pelvic Floor Course, emphasis will be placed on learning the external and internal vaginal examination and Laycock MMT. Students will be taught how to safely perform internal and external electrical stimulation and biofeedback treatments. Pelvic organ prolapse and treatment will be discussed as well as lectures on urogynecology surgeries and pharmacology.

Target Audience: PTs, PTAs, OTs, COTAs, ATCs

Instructional Level: Beginners

Instructional Methods: Hands-on lab, lecture with Q&A, group discussion, patient cases, evidence review. This is a live satellite course.

Course Completion Requirements: must attend the entire 2-day course and complete the post-course test

Course Rationale:

The Internal Pelvic Floor Dysfunction Course is a continuation of the External Pelvic Floor Dysfunction Course taught the day before. During the Internal Pelvic Floor Course, emphasis will be placed on learning the external and internal vaginal examination and Laycock MMT. Students will be taught how to safely perform internal and external electrical stimulation and biofeedback treatments. Pelvic organ prolapse and treatment will be discussed as well as lectures on urogynecology surgeries and pharmacology.

  

Course Objectives:
Identify the specific muscles and structures of the external and internal pelvic floor. Describe and perform internal pelvic floor muscle evaluations. List precautions, contraindications, universal precautions for internal pelvic floor examination and treatments. Describe the parameters of treatment and safe operation of handheld electrical stimulation and biofeedback for the treatment of urinary incontinence Demonstrate proper Pelvic Floor Manual Muscle Testing using the Laycock technique Demonstrate proper prolapse examination and treatment. Understand various medication that effect the bladder and urogynecology surgeries. Explain red flags related to examination and treatment of the pelvic floor.

11:00-12:00 Female Internal Palpation of the Pelvic Floor Lab

1:00-1:30 Pelvic Organ Prolapse
1:30-2:00 Electrical Stimulation and Biofeedback Lecture
2:00-3:00: Prolapse, hand held electrical stimulation, and biofeedback Lab
3:00-3:15: Break
3:15-3:30: Pharmacology Stress Incontinence Urge Incontinence
3:30-4:00: Over active Bladder
4:00-5:00 Case Studies to review complete vaginal exam and treatment
