This course has been designed to teach clinicians about current evidence for assessment and treatment of lymphedema in the recovering breast cancer patient. It will instruct clinicians on skills related to manual lymph drainage (MLD) for the upper and lower extremities, basic compression bandage wrapping, and therapeutic exercise. Clinicians will also be competent in providing appropriate education and referrals needed to optimize outcomes for this population.

Target Audience: PTs, PTAs, OTs, COTAs, ATCs

Instructional Level: Beginners

Instructional Methods: Hands-on lab, lecture with Q&A, group discussion, patient cases, evidence review. This is a live satellite course.

Course Completion Requirements: must attend the entire 2-day course and complete the post-course test

Course Rationale:

This course has been designed to teach clinicians about current evidence for assessment and treatment of lymphedema in the recovering breast cancer patient. It will instruct clinicians on skills related to manual lymph drainage (MLD) for the upper and lower extremities, basic compression bandage wrapping, and therapeutic exercise. Clinicians will also be competent in providing appropriate education and referrals needed to optimize outcomes for this population.

  

Course Objectives

  • Identify signs and symptoms of Lymphedema, as well as stage of progression.
  • Be able to differentiate between lymphedema, lipoedema, and venous inefficiency.
  • Identify contraindications and precautions of MLD and compression treatment.
  • Perform basic MLD treatment for upper and lower extremities.
  •  Establish appropriate plan of care for patients with breast cancer related lymphedema, including compression bandaging, MLD, therapeutic exercise and activities, and referrals for compression garments.
  • Provide appropriate education and referrals needed to optimize outcomes.
